Gallery U Celebrates Social Work Month in March With Series of Events
Galley U Boutique, a combination of a fully functional art space and shopping boutique located at 439 South Avenue W in Westfield, NJ, is proud to present SWART: Social Work Works, a month long celebration of social workers, art therapists and their connections to art.
Art is used by social workers and art therapists as an important transformative tool that acts as a creative outlet in helping people from all populations. Gallery U in Westfield, NJ, knows first hand the importance art can play in one’s life and is celebrating Social Work Month in March. SWART: Social Work Works is a month-long series of events that highlights the importance of art, social workers, and art therapists in our society.
The month begins with an opening reception on Thursday, March 6, 2014, from 6:00-8:00 PM. The community is welcome to join participating artists and view the artwork on exhibit by New Jersey social workers and art therapists. The artworks range from complex abstract explorations of themes such as trauma, psychological theories and mental health recovery, to realistic renderings of people, places and things. SWART offers a cross section of perspectives from the richly varied social work community. Artwork will be on exhibit until March 31, 2014. Gallery U is also presenting a discussion on Saturday, March 8, 2014, from 1:00 - 4:00 PM where participating artists will engage in a dialogue on the importance of social work, therapy and art.
Gallery U’s monthly poetry reading series, Poetry U, will hold a special SWART edition on Thursday, March 20, 2014, from 7:00- 9:00 PM. The monthly reading series that highlights 5-6 featured local poets will bring the focus to the artistic literary achievements of New Jersey social workers.
Finally, New Jersey social workers will have the opportunity to earn 3 free CEUs through the Monmouth University School of Social Work Professional Education Program (PEP) by attending Cultural Guardians: Social Work Advocacy for Art and Meaning in Culture, a workshop conducted by Lou Storey, LCSW, LCADC. This workshop is being offered on Saturday, March 22, 2014, from 1-4 PM. Interested social workers must pre-register to attend.
See for yourself the transformative power art can have on one person and a community. All are welcome to attend the events scheduled at Gallery U.
